In the village of Verdigny, Reverdy’s vineyards feature two of Sancerre’s three principal soil types: mainly caillottes, or pebbly white limestone, and some terres blanches, composed of richer marl formed in the Kimmeridgian era (the domaine has no parcels on the less common silexes, or flinty clay soils).
The result is a Sauvignon Blanc balancing bright, zesty citrus and delicate floral nuances with an enveloping texture and stony, saline notes that make your mouth water. Winemaker Julie Guiard simply has the right touch, making her Sancerre one of the most universally gratifying white wines out there. Irresistibly charming now, it can even age for a few years if desired—the 1997 is currently in fine form!
2023 Sancerre Rouge

Sancerre is perhaps the number-one place you should be looking for approachable and well-priced Pinot Noir, and this is one of my favorite examples. It captures the grape’s trademark elegance via inviting aromas of red berries and peppery spice, with a delightfully supple texture that flows over the tastebuds without any friction. Julie, who took over vigneron duties for her uncle, Michel Reverdy, in 2018, ages her red in large barrels and bottles it unfiltered—a tradition Michel began for his American clients four decades ago. The 2023 is a bit more mouth-filling than usual—more goodness packed into the same size bottle.
