Compared to our other Patrimonio growers in northern Corsica—the Arena family, Yves Leccia, and Muriel Giudicelli—Domaine Giacometti is quite removed from the village of Patrimonio itself, nearly an hour’s drive to the west on the opposite side of the gulf of St. Florent. Their vineyards live in the largely uninhabited Agriate desert, a rugged nature reserve with a jagged coastline that was once the “breadbasket” of Corsica, as its name (which refers to “agrarian”) suggests. Wheat, olives and citrus trees once grew here, providing the island with a wealth of resources. On the route to visit the Giacomettis this past June, colleagues and I hugged the curves of the Agriate’s scrubby granite hillsides, questioning whether we were getting closer to our destination, or just getting lost. Upon arrival, under the shade of some olive trees, siblings Sarah and Simon served a casual lunch, including Corsican charcuterie, sheep’s milk cheeses, and a summer tart layered with garden-grown veggies. A few chilled bottles followed suit, like the Cuvée Sarah blanc, a lush and energetic Vermentinu bottling that tastes of cool honeydew. That first sip, with its crisp angles and floral notes of elderflower and orange blossom, provided instant refreshment. We also enjoyed their rosé, which in 2025 is bursting with sour cherry and watermelon, citrus peel and thyme. Served alongside a tarte aux fraises, it was hard to distinguish where the taste of real strawberry began and the wine’s fruit ended.
After lunch, we loaded into the back of Simon’s pickup truck for another adventurous ride. He pointed out their Niellucciu vineyards basking in the hot sun, and showed us some Vermentinu vines rooted deep into the rocky granite. The gentle breeze we felt coming off the sea made it easy to understand how the grapes thrive in such an arid place. At the winery, after tasting a few reds out of tank and barrel, we were struck by how Corsica’s native grapes could so clearly translate the beautifully rustic nature of this wild landscape. The Niellucciu-based Vin Coule and Agriate rouge, for example, each spoke to a different expression: the former fresh and fruity, with a touch of amaro and crushed blackberry, while the latter tasted lively and complex, with disarming notes of flint, resin, and wild mint.
We left the domaine bracing for the sinuous route, but instead, still buzzing from our experience, we didn’t even notice the dramatic journey. This vast, inhospitable part of the Île de Beauté had been, in fact, quite welcoming.
